Minister: Belarus, Algeria explore opportunities to cooperate in pharmaceuticals

ALGIERS, 3 December (BelTA) - Belarus and Algeria are studying how they can complement each other in pharmaceuticals, Belarusian Healthcare Minister Aleksandr Khodzhayev told journalists in Algiers on 3 December, BelTA has learned.

“When we spoke with Algeria’s minister of the pharmaceutical industry, we were able to identify common ground regarding how we can complement each other. Today Algeria’s pharmaceutical market is 70% covered by its own medicines. In Belarus, inpatient care is currently covered 90% by domestic drugs. This shows that the overall range of medicines we produce is quite extensive. But we need to identify those medicines produced in Algeria that we do not have, and those we produce that are of interest and not available in Algeria. I believe this is a very correct first step, which should be worked out and implemented in practice in the near term,” the minister said.

According to Aleksandr Khodzhayev, Algeria has been given a list of Belarusian medicines that includes about 1,700 items. “The Algerian side must study it carefully. When we reviewed Algeria’s list of medicines, we certainly saw cardiology drugs. They have modern domestic production. There is also the issue of registration, which differs somewhat from ours. But I am convinced that forms of compromise exist,” he noted.

The minister added that he also studied how Algeria’s healthcare system is organized and whether Belarusian experience might be useful: “It also included a meeting with the health minister and a visit to a large multidisciplinary hospital. During this visit, I was able to see that we have a similar range of specialists and a well-organized high-tech healthcare system. This includes pediatric oncology, pediatric surgery, and the work of general practitioners. We are very similar and close in these areas.”
