MINSK, 12 April (BelTA) - There are difficulties in the cultural sector, but they are not daunting, they simply need to be addressed, Belarusian Culture Minister Marat Markov told Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.
“The president joked about this, noting that I had asked for this position myself. In my opinion, the cultural sector is an order of magnitude more complex. Not necessarily larger in scale, but there are many intertwined elements, ranging from ideology to our heritage. There are issues (the president identified them) related primarily to the management system. It’s clear that cinema has also been affected to a certain extent. Belarus has room for growth in this regard,” Marat Markov said.
The minister emphasized that these identified points are challenges that will need to be worked on, but they are certainly not frightening.
Marat Markov, who previously headed the Information Ministry, was appointed Culture Minister on 9 March. When making this personnel decision, Belarusian head of state Aleksandr Lukashenko recalled the famous phrase that the most important of the arts is cinema. “I didn’t say it myself, but I fully support it. The fact that we have neglected cinema is completely unacceptable,” the Belarusian leader emphasized.
“When I was informed that Marat Markov had asked to be appointed Culture Minister, I was somewhat surprised, but I welcomed it. God willing, an upswing in cultural management will begin with you. I would only be glad. A person who has grown up before my eyes. I would only be happy,” the president said regarding the candidate for the post of Culture Minister.
