"On Point"
MINSK, 3 December (BelTA) – U.S. President Donald Trump’s goal is to strengthen the authority of his own team and himself, Russian political scientist and orientalist Karine Gevorgyan said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel, commenting on the substantive debate around Trump’s proposal for a peace plan to settle the Ukrainian conflict.
Analyzing Donald Trump’s behavior and statements, Karine Gevorgyan drew parallel with the rules of drama, noting that events follow a classic of the genre where conflict is always central. “In the classic structure: a conflict is introduced, unfolds, and is resolved. In other words, theater presents us with patterns of human behaviour, collective as well as individual. And politics adheres to this same script,” she believes.
“This might be politically incorrect to say, but I highly doubt he [Trump] is naive enough to believe that everyone will just gather round and start discussing his plan right away. He must have communicated with both Zelensky and Putin. He is fully aware of the domestic opposition that hasn’t gone anywhere and remains active against him. He is playing his cards right to keep power in his grasp, at least nominally. He knows where the traps are laid. One cannot deny that Donald Trump aims to strengthen the authority of his own team and himself,” Karine Gevorgyan explained.
According to the political analyst, the U.S. leader actually stands to gain from being called a narcissist and an idiot. “Just like from the narrative that he can’t stop talking about, and allegedly prays for, winning a Nobel Prize. I’m utterly convinced his silent or not so silent approval played a part in the Venezuelan representative getting that award. And he couldn’t care less about this prize. He is playing a game. All of this is very beneficial for him,” the expert concluded.
