CIS officials pay tribute to feat of Soviet people in Minsk

MINSK, 5 May (BelTA) – In the run up to the 81st Victory Day anniversary, a rally and flower-laying ceremony took place at the Allée of Friendship on the grounds of the Victory Museum and Park Complex in Minsk on 5 May, BelTA has learned.

CIS First Deputy Secretary General Igor Petrishenko noted that the CIS countries suffered immense losses during the Great Patriotic War. “There is a special feeling when you stand here in the Victory Park. It was named after the incredible feat of our people. Our ancestors’ courage allows us to work, study, and raise children. But none of this would have been possible without them standing shoulder to shoulder and defending our homeland during those brutal years,” he said.

“Over 12,000 of our citizens received the Hero of the Soviet Union title. They include soldiers who died in battle, who never returned from concentration camps, who fell defending Brest Fortress, Smolensk, and Moscow, who did not live to see Victory in besieged Leningrad, and those who liberated our country during Operation Bagration,” he added.

According to him, there are more and more attempts today to discredit the feat of our people, to downplay the role of our great nation in the Victory over fascism, in the liberation of Europe, and in the bright present and future that the Soviet soldier gave to the whole world. This is why we must honor the memory of our ancestors together, who gave their lives for our future.

“The Great Patriotic War took 27 million lives of Soviet citizens. These are the heaviest losses of any nation in that war. We understand that we are the victorious people, and today, when neo-Nazism has started rearing its head again, we must speak out against fascism,” Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Belarus Boris Gryzlov said.

Permanent Plenipotentiary Representative of Belarus to the CIS Igor Nazaruk noted that the Allée of Friendship was created on the initiative of the CIS Executive Committee. “It is very symbolic that the Allée of Friendship is located in the historic center of Minsk and serves as a gathering place for Belarusians and visitors who come to pay tribute to the Soviet people’s sacrifice,” he added.
