MINSK, 3 February (BelTA) – Participants of the 18th Belarusian Antarctic expedition have started testing and commissioning new equipment at the station: a modern plant designed to treat sanitary sewage. The plant has been recently delivered by the Akademik Fedorov ship, the press service of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus told BelTA.

The sewage treatment plant is supposed to increase ecological standards of the station. The plant is now being tested for efficiency and resilience to extreme conditions. Apart from that, the polar explorers are also testing a new drilling rig designed for geocryological research and for collecting downhole samples as well as a GAZ-3344 snow and swamp-going vehicle.

The fulfillment of the research program continues within the framework of the 18th Belarusian Antarctic expedition: continuous meteorological monitoring, lidar and spectrometric studies of the atmosphere, experiments to study biodiversity and assess anthropogenic impact, including sampling for microplastic analysis.

BelTA reported earlier that the 18th Belarusian Antarctic expedition was launched at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus on 28 October 2025. The team includes 12 people. The state flag of Belarus and the flag of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus were hoisted at flag posts of the Belarusian Antarctic station Gora Vechernyaya [Evening Mountain] on 9 November 2025 in honor of the launch of the 18th Antarctic season. The avant-garde group of the 18th Belarusian Antarctic expedition participated in the ceremony. The polar explorers are now busy building the Belarusian Antarctic station and carrying out a wide range of scientific studies.
