Belarus’ stores at Lithuania border offer stranded truckers hot meals and custom orders

MINSK, 13 November (BelTA) – Special areas have been established for Lithuanian trucks stranded in Belarus at the Benyakoni checkpoint on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border, as well as at Berestovitsa, Kotlovka, and Kamenny Log. The trucks have been banned from entering Lithuania since 9 November, a measure that will remain in place until Lithuania reopens the border, BelTA reports.

All necessary conditions for a comfortable wait have been provided for the drivers at these areas. For instance, a Beltamozhservice store operates within the waiting area of the Benyakoni checkpoint.
According to store manager Kristina Mitskevich, their hot lunches are particularly popular. “We get blast-frozen lunches from a Grodno cafe and reheat them here. We offer both a first and a second course, with the cost of a lunch being approximately Br12,” she noted. She added that they accommodate the drivers’ requests when ordering, such as specially ordering chicken and beef for drivers from Asian countries.
“They also make chicken burgers and hot dogs, as well as French fries and nuggets,” added Kristina Mitskevich.

The store manager remarked that Belarusian dairy products and sausages are in high demand. “We always listen to our customers’ needs and try to meet all of them,” she said, noting that drivers most often come for lunch but also stop by for a morning cup of coffee.
Many drivers also go shopping in a nearby agro-town. At one of the stores in the agro-town of Benyakoni, shift supervisor Veslava Belyayeva reported that truckers come to buy foodstuffs.
“Chilled meat, vegetables, and fruits are in demand; they also buy water, as well as sausages and dairy products. Essentially, everything we have is in demand. We are close by, and the guys can walk over and stretch their legs,” she noted, adding that the flow of customers waiting at the border has recently subsided a bit.

“People are coming less often now. They have been standing here for a while, and they’re running out of money,” she said. “Before, there’d be a car leaving, and someone would support someone else, but now, since there’s no movement, there’s no support, and the guys are splitting things up among themselves, as far as we know.”
