Belarus identifies five districts for new automatic weather stations in 2026

MINSK, 12 January (BelTA) - Five districts in Belarus have been selected for the construction of new automatic weather stations in 2026, Tatyana Chetyrko, First Deputy Head of the National Center for Hydrometeorology, Radioactive Pollution Control, and Environmental Monitoring (Belhydromet), told a press conference, BelTA has learned.

Belhydromet is placing significant emphasis on expanding and modernizing its observation network. “To improve weather forecasting, further develop the state hydrometeorological observation network, and provide coverage across the country’s districts, five new automatic weather stations from a Belarusian manufacturer were built in 2025 under the state investment program in areas where such observations were not previously conducted. Two new stations were set up in Grodno Oblast, one in Brest, another in Gomel, and one more in Mogilev. Furthermore, five new districts have been identified for the construction of automatic meteorological stations in 2026: one in each district,” Tatyana Chetyrko.

As a result of this work, 73 meteorological stations with 100% automation are now operational in Belarus. “In addition, throughout the year, five existing observation posts were modernized under the state program “Environmental Protection and Sustainable Use of Natural Resources” for 2021-2025. This involved replacing measuring equipment that had reached the end of its service life, including outdated devices, with new ones that meet modern standards, as well as implementing specialized software for processing and presenting hydrometeorological information,” she said.

Due to frequent heavy rainfall events across the country, a decision was made to expand precipitation observation points. “This year, we installed eight additional automated precipitation gauges in major cities and regional centers: three in Minsk, one in Grodno, one in Brest, two in Gomel, and one in Mogilev,” said Tatyana Chetyrko.

“Over the past three years, including 2025, Belhydromet has ensured a high level of weather forecast accuracy: over 98% for the first day, and over 97% for the second and third days. The accuracy of warnings for adverse hydrometeorological phenomena in 2025 was 97.2%, and for storm warnings of dangerous hydrometeorological phenomena during the same period, it reached 98.1%,” she added.
