BREST, 24 November (BelTA) - Archaeological artifacts have been added to the Brest Regional History Museum in 2025, BelTA learned from the museum.
The Berestye Archaeological Museum, a branch of the Brest Regional History Museum, has put together an exhibition of new acquisitions. Visitors can see two bronze fibulae. These artifacts were discovered by members of the general public.
For instance, a fibula, which fates back tp the 4th-3rd century BC, was found near the village of Vygnanka in Kamenets District. It belongs to the Pomeranian culture. The second relic is “younger”. It is a fragment of a fibula dating back to the end of the 1st - early 2nd centuries. The relic was discovered near Bolshiye Radvanichy in Brest District. Experts suggest it may belong to the Przeworsk or Wielbark cultures.
A fibula is a brooch or a pin for fastening garments that could also serve as a piece of jewelry. This wardrobe item remained popular until the Middle Ages, when it was gradually replaced by buttons. “Fashion for fibulae changed quite frequently. Because of this, they serve as an extremely reliable chronological indicator for researchers, helping them to date not only individual archaeological complexes but entire cultures,” the Brest Regional History Museum said.
Its holdings contain more than 178,000 museum items. These are grouped into 35 collections that comprehensively showcase the history of the Brest region. “The collections served as foundation for opening the branches: Kamenets Tower, Berestye Archaeological Museum, Rescued Art Treasures and the Art Museum. Each year, we receive over 600 new museum items. This year alone, the museum has already accepted 685 items. These include memorial complexes, documents, photographs, archaeological artifacts, phaleristics and numismatics, textiles and clothing, everyday objects, and much more,” the museum informed.
For example, this year, the museum has acquired Lenin Order, which was awarded to Brest Oblast in 1967 for its active participation in the partisan movement, the courage and resilience demonstrated by its workers in the struggle against the German fascist invaders, and the successes achieved in the restoration and development of the national economy. The Brest Regional History Museum has also been donated a blouse made by Polina Grokholskaya, a teacher at the Domachevo orphanage, who was executed by the fascists along with her pupils on 23 September 1942. The teacher hand-embroidered this garment and gifted it to the daughters of a fellow villager who decided to give the blouse to the museum. Specialists continue to gather materials about individuals who made significant contributions to the development of the Brest region and about landmark events, including the reunification of Western and Eastern Belarus.
