MINSK, 12 September (BelTA) — Belarus’ policy is not aggressive towards Poland. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement as he met with representatives of various nationalities, who live in Belarus, BelTA has learned.
Aleksandr Songin, Chairman of the public association “Union of Poles in Belarus”, made a speech during the meeting. “While communicating with residents on both sides of the border, I understand very clearly that ordinary people are waiting for the soonest normalization of relations between the countries. Are the Polish authorities willing to listen to Belarus’ proposals to normalize the current relations?” he asked.
“I won’t talk about our relations with the Polish leadership. I don’t want to say that we have excellent relations with all Poles living in Poland, but 99% of the Poles understand our policy and, I am sure, support it. Our policy is not aggressive towards Poland. We are not trying to impose our policy or fight a war with Poland. We understand perfectly well that millions will die in this war and no one will win. And we don’t need a war. We need peace and calm,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stated.
Moreover, the Belarusian government is ready to normalize relations with Poland any day now but the ball is on the Polish side, the Belarusian leader stressed. The head of state mentioned various unfriendly steps made by Polish authorities with regard to Belarus. Such as the closure of border crossings, sanctions-based restrictions, the construction of a wall at the border, and absolutely unjustified criticism of migration-related affairs and the observance of human rights.
Moreover, Poland is politically dependent on the United States of America. Poland’s leadership spends huge amounts of money on weapons, thus creating additional military tensions in the region.
Aleksandr Lukashenko admitted that Belarus now pays more attention to the border with Poland than the border with Ukraine although a war is going on to the south. “We’ve reinforced the border. We’ve set up strong points. You saw that I visited one of the strong points outside Brest. We created virtually the second border at the high grounds that are convenient for the military. If you have to take a strong point like that, you will lose thousands of warriors doing it. Why? Who needs that? But we have to defend ourselves. Moreover, we have everything for defending our country,” the head of state stressed. “And you know me, I will not hesitate for a second in defense of my Belarus. We are not going to draw any lines. God forbid if they step on our soil. They respect only strong ones. This is why there must be no weakness.”
Despite all the frictions and tensions Aleksandr Lukashenko urges the Belarusian government not to quarrel with Poles: “We may have underperformed somewhere. Let’s treat them well. Let’s take steps to meet each other halfway.”
“We pursue a wise and restrained policy. The ball is on their side. We are ready to cooperate with them as deeply as they are ready for it,” the Belarusian leader stated.
