MINSK, 27 February (BelTA) – The Union State is the response to anyone trying to drive a wedge between Belarus and Russia, Viktor Azarenok, member of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, told BelTA as he commented on the outcomes of the Union State Supreme State Council meeting in Moscow on 26 February.
At the Supreme State Council meeting in Moscow, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the interim results of the work of the Union State of Belarus and Russia in 2024-2026. As the Belarusian leader noted, they also set the “vector for a new stage of integration development in all directions.”
The focus was primarily on the economy, the MP stated. He quoted Aleksandr Lukashenko, who stated that “technological sovereignty, reliance on our own resources and competencies, the priority of the Union State product, and protection of the common market of the Union State” represent security frontiers every bit as crucial as military and foreign policy ones.
While discussing reports from government representatives on the implementation of the Main Directions for Implementing the Union State Treaty for 2024-2026, the Belarusian leader pointed to the fact that “only 40 percent of sectoral activities have been completed so far.” He emphasized that preparation for the next three-year cycle must ensure not only proper planning but also execution, which requires all issues to be thoroughly and comprehensively examined.
“Belarus and Russia are firmly determined to jointly overcome all challenges and threats. All the more so when it comes to military security. Although key decisions aimed at strengthening the defense potential of the Union State were already made earlier, security issues were also seriously discussed during the Supreme State Council meeting: the parties intend to further strengthen cooperation in this area, as the West's unprovoked aggression and escalation of tensions demand, at the very least, our vigilant attention,” the MP emphasized.
It is obvious that in today’s world, preserving sovereignty and truly following one’s own path is extremely difficult, as can be seen from the example of neighbors, Viktor Azarenok observed. “But we are not led by anyone: the Union State is our response to anyone trying to drive a wedge between Belarus and Russia,” the MP concluded.

“The meeting was undoubtedly a landmark one. Belarus and Russia have never been closer than they are now,” Viktor Azarenok noted. The MP also highlighted Russian President Vladimir Putin’s remarks on approaches to the international agenda, which are very close or coincide: both countries strive to create a multipolar world. The Russian head of state emphasized that the union is based on the unbreakable bonds of fraternal friendship and centuries-old traditions of good neighborliness, as well as shared cultural traditions and values.
