MINSK, 29 May (BelTA) - The possible development of a space agency in the country was discussed at the meeting of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko with the Council of Ministers on 29 May, BelTA has learned.
According to the head of state, back in the Soviet times Belarus had a space industry with an impressive component in defense, science, communications and other areas.
“During the years of sovereignty we have made strong progress in these areas, especially now, under sanctions. We are working on a Russian-Belarusian spacecraft for ultra-high resolution Earth remote sensing. Almost all the most important components of such a satellite are developed in Belarus and put on the Russian platform,” the president said. “Our Peleng manufactures most of the target equipment. Three space programs of the Union State are in the works.”
The National Academy of Sciences performs the main functions of regulating space activities.

“The question is simple: is the current management structure bad or insufficient? Is it able to participate in international programs? What will we get from the development of a ‘Belarusian NASA’? Will the effect be comparable to the costs of the new organization and its maintenance?” Aleksandr Lukashenko outlined the key topics for discussion.
