Makei about destabilization attempts in Belarus: Russia is the main target

MINSK, 12 July (BelTA) – In an interview with the TV channel RT Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei talked about attempts to destabilize the situation in Belarus and about how they are connected to Russia, BelTA has learned.

The reporter asked Vladimir Makei whether Belarus had been a foothold for staging a revolution among other things followed by an assault on Russia.

Vladimir Makei said: “I absolutely agree. I think those, who masterminded these actions in Belarus, wanted to create a second Ukraine here. This is why things were much hotter. Then they wanted to transfer the experience onto Russia. Because Belarus is not the primary target now, Russia is. Because Russia is becoming a world power. It is actually an equal geopolitical player and determines rules of the game in the international arena to a large degree. The Western world does not like it. They are accustomed to getting things their way. It is absolutely unacceptable for them. I am deeply convinced that Russia is the main target.”

According to Vladimir Makei, all the events that have been going on in Belarus are the result of this geopolitical clash. “We just happened to be at this fissure at a wrong time. We understand it perfectly well and intend to work closely with our Russian friends. Both in the international arena in the bilateral format counteracting this kind of attempts and within the framework of various international organizations and our integration bodies that exist in the post-Soviet space,” he said.

Vladimir Makei also spoke about work with the Belarusian diaspora abroad. “Unfortunately, the diaspora is split. Regretfully, very many are on the other side of the barricades, so to say. They succumb primarily because they live abroad, get information primarily from local mass media and various local politicians. They are more susceptible to negative influence and engage in anti-government opposition, frankly speaking,” the official noted.

Yet Vladimir Makei is convinced that a huge number of Belarusians living abroad adequately evaluate the situation in Belarus and support the actions taken by the authorities to preserve calmness and stability. “Today we have to raise the awareness of the diaspora and we are doing just that. We have a system in place, a program. We will continue this work in order to get our point across to the fellow Belarusians that live abroad. We understand that it won't happen soon. Nevertheless, serious attention will be paid to this work,” Vladimir Makei said.
