Havana expresses support for Lukashenko, condemns plans to assassinate him

MINSK, 27 April (BelTA) – Cuba condemns the plans to organize a coup in Belarus and eliminate President Aleksandr Lukashenko, reads a Twitter post by Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, TASS reports.

"Cuba reaffirms its solidarity with Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko and strongly condemns the plans to assassinate him and his family and to stage a coup d'etat in the country," the diplomat wrote.

On 17 April Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko announced that opposition politician Grigory Kostusev, political analyst Aleksandr Feduta and lawyer Yuri Zenkovich had plotted an assassination attempt on him and his sons. According to the Belarusian investigation, the coup attempt was financed from abroad, and the conspirators maintained close ties with terrorist groups. They prepared three scenarios to seize power. The detainees have been charged for the conspiracy to seize power by unconstitutional means. All the detainees are giving confessions and cooperating with the investigation, the State Security Committee said.
