Creation of NATO-like single command not on agenda in CSTO

MOSCOW, 2 February (BelTA) – The establishment of a single command of the armed forces modeled on NATO is not on the agenda in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Secretary General of the CSTO Stanislav Zas said at an online press briefing on the military and political situation in and around the CSTO's area of responsibility, the CSTO's activities in 2020 and the goals for 2021, BelTA has learned.

“No, the creation of a single command of the armed forces is not on the agenda now. Of course, everything will depend on the situation on the ground. This should not be a project to pay lip service to. It all depends on how we will use our collective defense forces,” Stanislav Zas said.

Answering the question about a possibility of establishing a single budget for the CSTO armaments, the secretary general said: “As far as I know, NATO does not have a single budget for armaments, either. Each member state builds its armed forces using its own resources and capabilities. We are doing the same. We do not think that any other option is possible and needed.”
