Belarus' MP regrets growing antagonism in OSCE PA debate

MINSK, 6 July (BelTA) – The delegation of the National Assembly of Belarus to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE PA) is taking part in the plenary of the OSCE PA's 2021 Remote Session on 6 July, BelTA has learned.

“The OSCE PA's 2021 Remote Session is coming to a close today. Almost the entire agenda has been discussed, the work of ad hoc committees has been reviewed, issues that are relevant and important for all the OSCE member states have been covered. This is good-neighborliness in the field of information technology, the fight against terrorism, drug trafficking and much more. Yet, there are dubious situations when non-consensual resolutions are submitted for consideration to the Parliamentary Assembly. For example, yesterday at a meeting of the Standing Committee, several such resolutions were submitted at the last moment. They did not comply with the procedural rules and thus were rejected. One of them had to do with the Republic of Belarus. Nevertheless, the sponsors of this resolution want to return to it using different rules of procedure. Today we will discuss these issues,” Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives Andrei Savinykh said.

The parliamentarian stressed: “We have to admit with regret that discussions are getting increasingly confrontational even within the framework of parliamentary structures. Initially we were always proud of the fact that parliamentary structures were created to achieve mutual understanding and build bridges between nations and states.”

“We will voice our grievances regarding external interference in the domestic affairs of the Republic of Belarus, as well as unprecedented pressure on the part of the OSCE participating States. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus has irrefutable evidence suggesting external interference in domestic affairs and financing of the so-called opposition living abroad in order to destabilize the situation in Belarus,” Denis Karas, Member of the Standing Commission on Industry, Fuel and Energy Complex, Transport and Communications said.

According to the parliamentarian, this is unacceptable. “Let's take the crackdown on peaceful demonstrations in the Netherlands. People just came out to voice their dissatisfaction with the COVID measures. But the rallies were violently suppressed. And these countries are teaching us what to do and how to defend our sovereignty. After all, in fact, a war is going on - this is a kind of hybrid wars similar to orange revolutions,” he said.
