Belarus’ MFA issues protest to Lithuania over unilateral border closure without prior notice

MINSK, 27 October (BelTA) - On 27 October the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the Republic of Lithuania in the Republic of Belarus Erikas Vilkanečas to hand him a diplomatic note expressing a protest over another unilateral border closure by the Republic of Lithuania, which was carried out without any prior notice, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus.
“This decision, which has affected the rights not only of Belarusian citizens but also of Lithuanian citizens, and citizens of the European Union and other states, clearly demonstrates Vilnius's disregard for the fundamental principles of freedom of movement, one of the core values of the Schengen Area and the European Union as a whole,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

“We have to note the anti-people nature of such actions, where ordinary people become hostages to political expediency,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated. “Belarus, unlike the Lithuanian side, consistently advocates for the normalization of dialogue and practical cooperation on border issues, which would serve the interests of all citizens of our countries.”
