Belarus FM supports Russia's initiative to hold UN Security Council P5 summit

MINSK, 16 February (BelTA) - Belarus supports the initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold a summit of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said at a press conference in Minsk on 16 February, BelTA has learned.

“I think that the most important thing for the presidents of the leading countries today is to understand that further exacerbation of tension and hysteria, especially on security issues, will not lead to anything good. For the start, they need to welcome President Putin's initiatives and organize a meeting of the five members of the Security Council,” the minister said.

He also suggested considering the possibility for a meeting of the leaders of the OSCE member states as well. This is something that President Aleksandr Lukashenko mentioned several years ago.

The Russian president first voiced the initiative for a meeting of the leaders of the P5 UN Security Council at the international forum “Remembering the Holocaust: Fighting Antisemitism” in Jerusalem in January 2020. He suggested organizing a meeting of the heads of the permanent members of the UN Security Council - Russia, China, USA, France and the UK - to discuss the most serious global problems.
