MINSK, 1 March (BelTA) – Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Belarus Igor Karpenko told reporters about preparations for the elections of delegates to the Belarusian People’s Congress, BelTA has learned.
“The Central Election Commission has the authority to call the elections of delegates to the Belarusian People’s Congress from among members of civil society and local councils of deputies. Today we will determine quotas for civil society structures and local councils who will nominate their delegates. We need to approve a schedule for preparing and holding such elections as well as the budget,” said Igor Karpenko.
“As we have said, after the single voting day we will proceed to the elections of members of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly that are scheduled for 4 April. These elections will be followed by the elections of delegates to the Belarusian People’s Congress, the highest constitutional body of people’s power in the Republic of Belarus,” added the head of the Central Election Commission. “Thus, this will be a milestone in the socio-political modernization that was launched by the constitutional referendum,” he said.
On 1 March the Central Election Commission took stock of the elections to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly and heard reports from the chairs of oblast election commissions and the Minsk city election commission on the results of the elections to local councils of deputies.
