Belarus’ finance minister addresses public sector pay, new approaches

MINSK, 22 September (BelTA) – Real salary growth is a common task, including in public sector, Belarusian Finance Minister Yuri Seliverstov said on the air of the STV TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“Public sector workers, of course, should not be left out. This growth is also planned for them. However, in this case, alongside the planned growth, we must naturally also seek internal instruments. This means optimizing internal expenditures and cutting costs. We must not allow a situation where several people do the same job. This means that measures such as holding multiple positions can also yield additional earnings for employees through sector-established additional payments and bonuses,” Yuri Seliverstov said.

The finance minister also noted that one should not forget about extra-budgetary activities. “A wide range of services is offered to the public. This includes services provided by public sector organizations, and the provision of additional services. Perhaps sometimes not during working hours but on weekends, etc. But this will bring organizations additional income, which will also support the people providing these services and doing this work,” he added.

Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Vladislav Tatarinovich noted that next year’s state budget will run a deficit. “However, the deficit parameters will be somewhat lower than those originally approved for 2025. And most importantly, corresponding funding sources have also been provided to cover the budget deficit,” he explained.

“We must not forget the requirement of the head of state that budget funds must be used efficiently, and the budget money must be saved when possible. This will create reserves that can be used for accelerated funding of expenses, a highly flexible mechanism,” Vladislav Tatarinovich said.
