General Confederation of Trade Unions plans meeting on Chernobyl 30th anniversary in Belarus

GOMEL, 6 April (BelTA) – The General Confederation of Trade Unions (GCTU) and the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus (FTUB) are set to hold an onsite meeting of the GCTU commission for labor protection, environment, health and social security of workers in Gomel Oblast on 6-8 April to mark the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, BelTA learnt from PR specialist of the Gomel Oblast Association of Trade Unions Irina Nikolayeva.

Partaking in the meeting will be representatives of the CIS Executive Committee from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, the Union State and other countries, as well as scientists and specialists in radiation medicine, liquidators, and heads of trade unions. The participants of the three-day event will get familiar with the work conducted in Belarus to mitigate the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

On 6 April the delegation will visit the evacuation zone in Vetka District and see the Shklyarov Museum of Old Beliefs and Belarusian Traditions in Vetka.

On 7 April the commission will get familiar with the work of the National Research Center for Radiation Medicine and Human Ecology. The plenary session will highlight a number of reports, including on the implementation of the Union State joint program to mitigate the consequences of the Chernobyl accident and on the operation of public organizations on the rehabilitation of people affected by the accident.

The event will be wrapped up on 8 April with a visit to the Institute of Forest of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
