Belarus, Ukraine, Poland review situation on common borders

MINSK, 2 May (BelTA) - Experts of the analytical units of the border services of Belarus, Ukraine and Poland held a meeting in Kiev to assess the border security threats on 29 April, BelTA learned from the State Border Committee of Belarus.

The experts discussed the information interaction and the prospects for its further development. After analyzing the situation on the joint sections of the border in 2016, the experts concluded that it remains controlled. Major risks and threats on the border are still illegal migration, transit terrorism, illicit movement of arms, ammunition and drugs.

Ukraine drew attention to the need to combat smuggling of goods, especially tobacco products as its channels and ways of movement can be used for other cross-border illegal activities.

Representatives of the border agencies of the three states stressed the importance of the joint assessment of threats as an efficient mechanism to forecast the situation on the borders and agreed to continue the practice of holding annual meetings.
