Belarus president partakes in OIC summit in Istanbul
ISTANBUL, 14 April (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko took part in the summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul on 14 April, BelTA has learned.
The head of state made a speech during the summit. Meetings and negotiations with leaders of foreign countries also took place on the sidelines of the summit.
The summit is taking place under the motto “Unity and solidarity for justice and peace”.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is an international organization that comprises over 50 countries with the population of 1 billion people. Approaches and priorities of Belarus and the OIC in the international scene coincide a lot particularly in such areas as family values, religious tolerance, sustainable development, and human rights.
The two leaders discussed various aspects of Belarus-Qatar cooperation, including the prospects of developing cooperation in the economy. Global issues in general were on the agenda as well.
The Kazakhstan President drew attention to the good prospects of Belarus using Kazakhstan's transport infrastructure for the sake of advancing trade relations with China. A lot had been done recently for the sake of developing this sphere.
Apart from that, the Belarus President said it is possible to advance cooperation with Afghanistan using the experience Belarus has accumulated by working with the countries Afghanistan borders on.
During his visit to Indonesia several years ago the sides concluded a number of agreements which are being implemented today. “I am convinced that we will manage to ramp up the trade turnover and, as we have planned, to exceed billion,” Alexander Lukashenko noted.
“Last year was a special year for our countries. It will make history,” the Belarusian head of state remarked. Belarus and Pakistan have established strategic partnership within a year, he added.
“At present no country in the West or the East can feel safe from this evil that feeds on disunity and mistrust between countries, nations, and cultures,” stressed the Belarusian leader.
“The interest in the enhancement of the ties with the Islamic world is an absolutely conscious choice of Belarus. By implementing the multi-vector policy and being open to the external world, by not willing to be constrained in the narrow bounds of Eurocentrism at the end of 1990s we became the only full-fledged member of the Non-Aligned Movement among all European countries at that moment in time,” the President said.
“The decreasing ‘immunity' against the use of force is particularly alarming. The accumulating critical mass of minor conflicts can result in a global showdown one day,” believes the Belarusian leader.
“It is obvious that the formation of the truly multi-polar world is impossible without Muslims. The contours of this multi-polar world are shaping today. Alongside with other important geopolitical players, the Islamic world can become one of the pillars of stability and security, the driving force of progressive and sustainable development on the planet,” the head of state said.
"Granting the OIC observer status to Belarus would be the next logical step that would bring about new opportunities for advancing mutually beneficial cooperation,” stated Alexander Lukashenko.
On the sidelines of the summit the Belarusian delegation had had over a dozen meetings with leaders of Turkey, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Qatar, Indonesia, and other countries. Matters concerning the development of trade and economic cooperation were discussed.
