Ukraine imposes additional measures on border with Belarus in connection with Russia's ban on transit

KIEV, 6 January (BelTA – UKRINFORM) - Ukraine adopted additional measures and reinforced the checkpoints on the Belarusian-Ukrainian border as Russia introduced a new regime of cargo transit to Kazakhstan (via Belarus), the press service of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine informed.

"Russia suspended the free trade agreement with Ukraine on 1 January 2016 and introduced a new regime of cargo transit. Cargoes from Ukraine which transit through Russia to Kazakhstan are let through. In addition, Russia identified the transit routes to Kazakhstan from the territory of the Republic of Belarus and also the relevant crossing points on the border with Belarus and Kazakhstan,” the statement said.

Given this and also a possible increase in the number of cargo vehicles, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine took additional measures. “In collaboration with the State Fiscal Service, we reinforced the checkpoints on the Belarusian-Ukrainian border to ensure a rhythmic pass-through of trucks and goods across the border,” the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine informed.

With a view of preventing social tensions and build-up of queues, corresponding explanatory work is carried out among drivers and forwarders about the changes in the rules of movement of transit goods across the Russian Federation.

As was reported, on 1 January 2016 Russia began to tax Ukrainian imports to the Russian Federation, and imposed a ban on the import of embargoed food. Russia also banned the transit of Ukrainian goods through its territory to third countries.
