Plans to complete M6 highway makeover ahead of 2nd European Games

IVYE DISTRICT, 30 March (BelTA) – The reconstruction of the M6 highway Minsk-Grodno-the border of the Republic of Belarus (Bruzgi) needs to be completed ahead of the European Games MINSK 2019, Belarus' Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov said during his working trip to Grodno Oblast on 30 March, BelTA informs.

“We have a plan of works, and the road should be ready for the European Games. Roadside service facilities should be developed ahead of the sports forum as well,” Andrei Kobyakov said.

According to Belarus' Transport and Communications Minister Anatoly Sivak, the reconstruction of the road will be completed by late 2018. “Due to weather conditions March has never been a full-fledged working month for road builders. Asphalt and roadbed works are scheduled for April. This year the road will be ready for use,” he said.

The M6 highway reconstruction plan envisages the installation of concrete, monolithic and prefabricated, barriers. “They are more complicated in use than steel ones used to separate traffic lanes before but they have security benefits. We took into account different experience and decided in favor of concrete barriers,” Anatoly Sivak said.

"In case of monolithic products, the quality of concrete is of high importance, so that the barriers could serve long and not be destroyed by temperature and other effects, for example, reagents used on roads,” the minister said.

The M6 highway reconstruction project is implemented with the help of the World Bank $250 million loan. The second stage of reconstruction is currently underway on a 67.3km section.
