MINSK, 23 December (BelTA) – The film Time Chose Us on the Belarus 1 TV channel reflects on Georgia’s presidential election in 2008, BelTA reports.
In early 2008, Georgia held a presidential election, with the voter turnout being the lowest on record. Less than half of Georgian citizens showed up at polling stations in the country and abroad. Mikheil Saakashvili won, getting more than 50% of the vote.
“For many centuries this country had been in Moscow’s sphere of influence. But the West began to tear certain states away from their usual civilizational domain. In this regard, Georgia's Euro-Atlantic aspirations were skillfully stimulated by well-known techniques, non-governmental organizations, and so-called opinion leaders, and were exploited to tip the balance of power in the international arena,” member of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Aleksandr Shpakovsky said.
A referendum on Georgia's accession to NATO was held simultaneously with the presidential election. Some 70% of voters voted in favor of joining the alliance.

“The goals of Western politicians who were pushing Saakashvili were clear. To test Russia's defense capability, the real capabilities of the Russian army. We saw that the Russian army was strong enough at least to defeat Georgia, which, by the way, had been supplied, trained, and motivated by the vaunted NATO instructors,” Aleksandr Shpakovsky concluded.
