MINSK, 26 November (BelTA) - Whom newly-elect president Aleksandr Lukashenko called first in 1994 was shown in the film “Time chose us” aired by the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.
Aleksandr Lukashenko made his first phone call after the inauguration to Russian President Boris Yeltsin. The presidents agreed then that only together they could overcome the deep crisis in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Belarusian leader paid his first foreign visit to Russia on 3 August 1994.
“It was a very hard time. We had a food coupon system then. the country was not genuinely sovereign and independent. However, Belarus coordinated its policy in certain extent with the Russian Federation. Belarus received certain assistance, but it was far from what the country needed,” said Belarusian stateman Mikhail Myasnikovich, the deputy prime minister in 1994-1995.
