MINSK, 1 March (BelTA) – Ukraine could end up being the prodigal sister, finding it better to return to the fold and join the Union State, military analyst and former US intelligence officer Scott Ritter said on the air of the Belarus 1 television channel, BelTA reports.

Should Belarus be friends with the European Union? The analyst believes that the eastern direction is safer for Belarus. “The West is not your friend; the West is trying to destroy you. And your true friend is Russia, and perhaps you should be friends with those who want to be friends with you. I think the Union State has now reached maturity,” Scott Ritter said.

He noted that Belarusians are different from Russians. “They emphasize this themselves; it’s not for me to say. They tell me: ‘We are different, not the same. Don’t make the mistake of conflating us. We are completely different.’ The history of Belarus calls for a more pragmatic approach, a willingness to listen, and a desire to avoid confrontation. And you know, as I’ve said, it was useful for me to visit Belarus, take a tour of the National Museum, go to Khatyn, talk to people, and understand how different these countries are. You are together with Russia politically, economically, and even militarily. I mention this because there’s always talk about the third sister. And the third sister is Ukraine,” the analyst said. “The Bible talks about the prodigal son returning home. Maybe Ukraine is destined to be the prodigal sister, eventually returning and becoming part of the Union State. Who knows? It’s an incredibly difficult situation because there is so much hatred. One last thought: when you think of such a complicated issue, it’s easy to lose hope.”

Scott Ritter said that he remembers the wars in Chechnya. “I also remember that Russia waged a terrible war, two terrible wars, with Chechnya. I’ve been to Chechnya several times. And I’m simply amazed. I call it the Chechen miracle, because Chechens and Russians now live together in peace and harmony. And this proves that it’s possible. And you know, what made this possible was the leadership of Vladimir Putin, the leadership of Akhmat Kadyrov, who united and made the courageous decision to put an end to the war and discuss a future. If Ukraine can produce a leader willing to sit down with Vladimir Putin, I have no doubt that Ukraine can witness its own miracle – be reborn and resurrected. With full respect for Ukrainian national sentiments, the Ukrainian language, history, and culture, I believe this is achievable. But good leadership is needed, and Ukraine today lacks good leadership,” the military analyst emphasized.
