Union State MPs to help observe referendum in Belarus

MOSCOW, 22 February (BelTA) – Members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia will participate in observing the referendum on amending Belarus' Constitution, the assembly's press service told BelTA.

According to the source, a delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia will be in Belarus on 24-28 February as part of the observation mission sent by the Commonwealth of Independent States. The delegation will observe progress of the national referendum on amending and expanding the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus.

The delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia will be led by Artyom Turov, Chairman of the Legislation and Regulation Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly, Deputy Chairman of the Committee for CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration, and Ties with Compatriots of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of Russia. The delegation also includes member of the Legislation and Regulation Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, Chairman of the Regulation Commission of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Viktor Pinsky and member of the Ecology, Nature Management, and Accident Management Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, member of the Defense and Security Committee of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Aleksandr Yaroshuk.

The observers sent by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia will visit polling stations in Brest, Minsk, and Minsk Oblast. A number of meetings with top officials of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus has been planned as well as meetings with officials of regional election commissions, representatives of regional councils of deputies, and administrative bodies.

The observers intend to sum up results of their monitoring work at a press conference on 28 February.
