MINSK, 25 January (BelTA) – The voice of observers from the Pan-African Parliament at Belarus' election is very important, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko said as he met with a group of international observers from the Pan-African Parliament who came to Belarus to monitor the preparation and conduct of the presidential election, BelTA has learned.
“For us, the objective opinion of observers from the Pan-African Parliament is fundamentally important,” Igor Sergeyenko said.
During the observation period, international observers will have the opportunity to visit polling stations, talk to people, and be present at the vote count.
Igor Sergeyenko pointed out that the election is not held to please anyone. “We are choosing our country's development strategy for a long term. Only the Belarusian people can make such decisions,” he said.
According to the chairman of the House of Representatives, the state has created all the conditions for a democratic and transparent expression of people's will. “Parliamentarians of our country also have the right to be observers. We have established constant communication with the public. We see support for the current government course. Our people want to see stability, public order and progress in our country,” Igor Sergeyenko noted.
Speaking about the visit of the representatives of the Pan-African Parliament to Belarus, the chairman of the House of Representatives expressed confidence that the visit will open a new chapter in the history of friendship and cooperation between Belarus and African states and the Pan-African Parliament.
According to Igor Sergeyenko, the Pan-African Parliament has established itself as an authoritative international organization that consistently advocates for peace, justice, security and sustainable development for all. “I had the opportunity to see this first-hand while participating in the session of the Pan-African Parliament last November, as well as in July during the BRICS event in St. Petersburg. It was during the session that a preliminary agreement was reached on the participation of the Pan-African Parliament in election observation in Belarus,” he said.
The chairman of the House of Representatives expressed confidence that during the delegation's visit to Minsk there would be an opportunity to discuss issues of inter-parliamentary cooperation.
