MP: Poland's actions can destabilize situation on Belarus' border, threaten lives

MINSK, 17 November (BelTA) – Poland's actions on the border can destabilize the situation and threaten people's lives, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives Andrei Savinykh told reporters as he presented the official statement of the Standing Commission on International Affairs regarding the aggravating migrant crisis on 17 November, BelTA has learned.

“The Standing Commission on International Affairs is seriously concerned over the rising tensions on the border of the Republic of Belarus with the European Union in view of the migrant crisis. Thousands of migrants seeking asylum in the EU countries are toughly blocked by the Polish security forces in a makeshift camp on the Belarusian-Polish border. We are outraged by the actions of the Polish side that used water cannons and tear gas against unarmed people seeking a peaceful life. These unacceptable actions run afoul of the international commitments voluntarily assumed by the European Union member states and lead to destabilization of the situation and threaten people's lives,” Andrei Savinykh said.

In order to prevent further escalation of tensions and save human lives, the Belarusian MPs call on international organizations and, above all, the structures of the European Union to take immediate action to resolve the migrant crisis. “We demand a corridor for refugees as we believe that this move will help resolve the problem,” the MP added.
