Khrenin: CIS is building effective collective security mechanisms

MINSK, 24 September (BelTA) - The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is building effective mechanisms for ensuring collective security, Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin said in his welcoming address at a meeting of the Committee of Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces of the CIS member states on 24 September, BelTA has learned.
“The CIS has secured an important niche in the system of international organizations. It is building effective mechanisms for ensuring collective security across a vast territory inhabited by over 250 million people. Furthermore, the CIS makes a significant contribution to protecting the national sovereignty and internal stability of each of its member states. Military cooperation within the organization facilitates the development of a unified air defense system, a joint communications system, a unified system for monitoring and assessing the radiological, chemical, and biological situation, a single radar identification system, and a unified military geoinformation system. This significantly enhances the combat capabilities of our national armed forces and enables operational and effective interaction across a range of key security areas,” said Viktor Khrenin.
In his words, a set of annual events is held within the framework of CIS military cooperation, including live-fire exercises, command-staff exercises and drills, sports competitions, cultural and educational events, and other joint activities. “Thus, a multi-level and comprehensive system of military interaction is functioning within the CIS, strengthening the defense capabilities of the member states by improving troop training, ensuring access to new technologies, and sharing best practices across a wide range of areas,” the minister emphasized.

Viktor Khrenin pointed out that the CIS countries adhere to common views on key global and regional challenges, as well as on issues of strengthening trust and security in Eurasia. “We are consistently united by the conviction that it is necessary to preserve our common history and shared achievements. The year 2025 has been declared the Year of the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War across the CIS. Preserving historical memory, fostering patriotism among youth, and disseminating objective information about the events of the Second World War and the Great Patriotic War are also our task and responsibility,” he said.

The minister expressed confidence that the decisions made at the meeting of the Committee of Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces of the CIS member states would make a significant contribution to strengthening regional security and improving the level of combat readiness of troops, and would define new ambitious prospects for multilateral cooperation in the military sector.

Minsk played host to a meeting of the Committee of Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces of the CIS member states on 24 September. The event was attended by the heads of military departments from Belarus, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, as well as representatives from the Secretariat of the CIS Defense Ministers Council and the CIS Executive Committee.
