Introduction of biometric passports in Belarus stumbles over regulatory hurdle

MINSK, 6 January (BelTA) – It will be clear when the issuance of biometric identification documents starts once the relevant regulatory act is passed, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Internal Affairs Ministry's Telegram channel.

According to Deputy Head of the Citizenship and Migration Department of the Internal Affairs Ministry Pavel Khrishchenovich, all the citizenship and migration offices are now ready to accept applications from citizens for biometric identification documents. “The personnel have been trained how to operate the new equipment and have participated in a successful release of a test batch of such documents,” he noted.

Speaking about when biometric identification documents become available, the official added that the relevant regulatory act will be passed soon in order to begin the introduction of biometric identification in Belarus.
