GRODNO, 15 February (BelTA) – A commemorative rally titled as “War was part of their destiny” was held in the garden square dedicated to the memory of Afghan War veterans in Grodno on 15 February, BelTA has learned.
Veterans of military operations, top officials of the oblast administration and the city administration, parliamentarians, representatives of the clergy, families of participants in local wars, military units, representatives of worker collectives and public organizations, and young people gathered at the memorial to internationalist soldiers. Those gathered confirmed that 15 February unites all those who performed their military duty outside their homeland in different years. Grave lanterns, red carnations and wreaths have become symbols of remembrance for those who fell in that war.
Participants of the commemorative rally honored the memory of their fellow countrymen who did not return from military conflicts. Fresh flowers and wreaths were laid at the foot of the monument.
“These are truly heroic people: those who did not return and those who are with us today. Our main task is to surround with care the veterans, internationalist soldiers, and their families, who did not see their sons, grandfathers, and fathers return from hot spots. We should remember, honor their memory and treat these events with respect. Thank you for being here, for your active life position, for educating our youth,” Andrei Khmel, Chairman of the Grodno City Executive Committee, told participants of the rally.
