‘He is a tough nut’. Political scientist on Lukashenko’s role in conflict resolution

MINSK, 3 February (BelTA) – In the latest episode of the V Teme (On Point) project on BelTA’s YouTube channel, Russian political scientist and orientalist Karine Gevorgyan spoke about the role Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko could play in conflict resolution.
Reflecting on the current events in Ukraine and Iran, she said: “I usually don't make such judgments. Instead, I try to understand, in human terms, the political and diplomatic aspects tied to the power in my country. I get the feeling that, amid rising global anxiety, governments are too focused on methods of calming society.”

The expert warned of what she described as the Sidonius Apollinaris syndrome: “Here I see it, here I don’t. I recognize this danger. I understand that we have limited resources to act and prevent it, and it seems that little is being done, judging from how things are unfolding, by the confusion among the leaders of the post-Soviet republics in the South, how they behave, who they negotiate with, and how they are torn between London and Beijing.”

"It's difficult to see the leaders of Central Asia rushing around, and we ourselves lack clarity. In the process, we are losing ground. This is why I refer to it as the Sidonius Apollinaris syndrome," she said.

Karine Gevorgyan added that Iran also lacks sufficient resources to prevent danger, and chaos on its borders could be a threat.

“I believe Aleksandr Grigoryevich [Lukashenko] can do a lot. He is a tough nut: you can’t just crack him,” she said. “On the external front he has shown himself to be a very firm person. And now, because of this, people bow before him.”
