LOGOISK DISTRICT, 22 March (BelTA) – Belarus will do everything it can for the consequent generations to be inoculated against war. Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus (NBRB) Roman Golovchenko made the statement after laying flowers at the WW2 memorial Khatyn on 22 March, BelTA has learned.
Roman Golovchenko stressed that today it is important to do everything possible to make sure the WW2 memorial complex Khatyn is not just a tourist destination on the country’s map.
“And first of all, by defending our position in favor of the need to preserve the historical truth, to go deeper to uncover the roots and origins of those terrible events that took place in the Belarusian land. At the same it is the right thing to talk about the war with those who know about it only from works of fiction and stories told by people who aren’t even their relatives,” Roman Golovchenko stressed.
This is why museums are getting built in Belarus to highlight the history of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. With this in mind memorials are getting revived and are kept in proper condition.
“It is necessary to recall how Europe began its journey toward democracy in the 1990s: with the demolition and erasure of monuments to liberators. And 30 years later it is getting militarized and revanchist sentiments are resurging over there. This is a vivid example of what can happen when a nation treats its memorials and historical memory in this way. We will not go down that path and will do everything to ensure that future generations of Belarusians are inoculated against war unlike our European neighbors,” said Roman Golovchenko.
