"On Point"
MINSK, 13 February (BelTA) – A key feature of the current inspection of the Armed Forces’ combat readiness is that President Aleksandr Lukashenko is, in fact, taking personal command of the troops, Doctor of Military Sciences, Professor Nikolai Buzin said in a recent episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“As the commander-in-chief, the president wants to understand the real capabilities of the Armed Forces and how the plans for their improvement, reformation, and transformation are being implemented,” Nikolai Buzin said. “Therefore, he is setting the task for the inspection without the direct participation of the Defence Ministry or the General Staff. The president is taking charge of troop management himself to assess their ability to accomplish combat missions in a realistic operational environment.”
The expert pointed out that the ongoing inspection is being held in harsh weather conditions. Nevertheless, he added, there is a clear understanding that a potential armed conflict would not wait for suitable weather, as wars often start unexpectedly. “It might be 20 or 30 degrees below zero, freezing cold, with impassable roads... Can we accomplish our tasks under these conditions, or can’t we?” he emphasized.
Furthermore, Nikolai Buzin stated that the situation near Belarus’ western borders is quite tense: “Large groups of forces have been deployed near our borders, and new training grounds are being built. Not to mention the intelligence activities that are constantly being conducted in an intensified mode.”
The expert added that the ongoing military inspection is not only sudden but also comprehensive. This is evidenced by the selection of military units being tested. For instance, the 19th Separate Mechanized Brigade stationed in the north of the country and the 72nd Training Centre located in the central part.
“Upon completion of the inspection, there will be a thorough analysis of the performance, shortcomings, and nuances. Proposals for the further development of the Armed Forces will be drafted. This is not an inspection for the sake of inspection. The key is to determine whether the Armed Forces are really advancing,” Nikolai Buzin summarized.
