MINSK, 12 February (BelTA) – Belarus’ joining of the Board of Peace demonstrates Minsk’s readiness to work toward de-escalation and regional stability, political scientist Piotr Petrovsky said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
"Those who criticize Belarus for joining the Board of Peace do not understand Belarus’ logic. What would refusing to participate in the Board of Peace have given us? A conflict with the U.S. out of nowhere. We don't need that. But our fundamental task is to use various kinds of initiatives for de-escalating the situation and ensuring stability. And we are doing that,” Piotr Petrovsky said.
The expert believes that it is important for Belarus to maintain a balance of power in the region and not to engage in the arms race that the West is trying to impose. Furthermore, he noted, any initiatives aimed at preserving peace in the region and on the planet should be utilized. “We are a country that must work as much as possible with all partners, seek corridors for interaction, and avoid any collision at a time of turbulence when the rules of international relations are being erased. Our task is to keep our distance from any conflict,” the expert emphasized.
In his view, this is especially relevant given that certain forces seek to draw Belarus into conflict. “Our task is to demonstrate that we represent the party of peace and justice. We need fair international relations. Take our initiative, the Eurasian Charter of Multipolarity and Diversity in the 21st Century. We want the entire Eurasian continent to have a clear security system and international mechanisms for conflict resolution," the political scientist said.
