Expert draws parallel between European militarization today and in 1930s

MINSK, 11 November (BelTA) – The attempt to repurpose European enterprises for weapons production may have dire consequences for the European Union, Nikolai Buzin, member of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, said in a recent episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
He noted that the leadership of European countries is driving militarization under the pretext of protection from some mythical threat from Belarus and Russia. In fact, he believes, the reason for militarization lies in the desire to restart the economy after the failed policies of recent years. There is a growing sentiment among ordinary Europeans who are wondering: why the quality of their life is declining, and who is responsible?

“There are no good answers to voters’ questions. Because telling the truth would amount to confessing to a complete economic policy failure,” Nikolai Buzin said. “They would have to address the drop in industrial efficiency, job cuts, wrong decisions to move their own production to other states, the absence of a domestic resource base, and the rejection of sensible ways to secure it. They do not want to talk about it. It is easier to find a problem by looking beyond the borders of the European Union.”

This is why, the MP believes, Europe is returning to the strategy of the 1930s when Germany restarted its economy, including by repurposing enterprises for weapons production. “This has already happened once in European history. Today we see attempt number two. Unfortunately, for the European Union this attempt could be disastrous. After all, it is no coincidence that Ursula von der Leyen is trying to shift all the blame precisely onto the eastern neighbors. It is no coincidence that they are now maneuvering around the frozen (which is to say, stolen) Russian assets. The plain truth is that Europe lacks both the resources and the capability to address the challenges it faces,” Nikolai Buzin said.

In conclusion, he stated that an external threat is being fabricated to rationalize militarization: “The central narrative being pushed across the EU asserts that European nations and NATO itself are supposedly next in line following Ukraine’s defeat. This idea is the very foundation of the current political paradigm in Europe.”
