"On Point"
MINSK, 12 February (BelTA) – Whether drones can completely replace conventional artillery in the combat zone or not has been contemplated by the head of Russia’s center for studying military and political conflicts Andrei Klintsevich in a recent episode of BelTA’s YouTube project On Point.
“We will come to a point where artillery remains, but basic shells are upgraded to the glide bomb technology. Americans were the first to do it, and we will probably not lag behind,” said Andrei Klintsevich. “Essentially, ‘wings’ and a control unit are added, after which the shell turns into a small bomb.”
Speaking about the development of unmanned aviation, the expert noted that FPV drones are quite effective. Such a drone can fly into a building window, maneuver inside, and hit a target. At the same time, it does not carry a very large explosive charge.
“The destructive capabilities of a 152mm caliber shell are more serious. It can destroy a residential building. An FPV drone can, for example, partially destroy a building, but a shell is guaranteed to destroy it. Fog, rain, or anti-drone nets are not a problem for artillery,” emphasized Andrei Klintsevich.
The expert also mentioned convenience and low cost among the advantages of artillery. At the same time, he noted that the accuracy and range of artillery strikes should be improved. This problem can be solved by upgrading shells to the glide bomb technology.
Andrei Klintsevich also drew attention to the fact that towed artillery guns are essentially experiencing a renaissance. “Cannons are not placed in a row, as we have seen it in movies, but spread out over a distance of 15-20km. And when the guns fire at the target one after another and are covered with nets and are camouflaged afterwards, they are not so easy to detect. Both the enemy and we are now taking advantage of that,” the expert added.
