Expert comments on catastrophic situation in Ukraine’s economy

MINSK, 29 March (BelTA) - The Ukrainian economy is in a catastrophic situation, and the standard of living of the vast majority of the population is abysmal, former Prime Minister of Ukraine (2010-2014) Nikolai Azarov said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
“If the authorities in Kiev were even remotely reasonable, I’m not talking about possessing any unique qualities, they would pay attention to the catastrophic situation in the economy. You can even look at the statements of people who cannot be accused of being friendly toward Russia,” said Nikolai Azarov. “For example, the head of the budget committee of the so-called parliament, the Verkhovna Rada. He cites examples showing that due to the incompetent activities of the Kiev regime’s government, $5.3 billion from the World Bank were not received last year. For Ukraine, that is an enormous sum.”

The former prime minister of Ukraine also drew attention to the fact that the terms of the International Monetary Fund have not yet been agreed upon, putting Kiev at risk of not receiving $8.1 billion. “These are, after all, internal matters of the Kiev regime. This is the organizational and administrative work of the president, the government, and the Verkhovna Rada. They are not focused on obtaining this, roughly speaking, free money,” he said.

According to Nikolai Azarov, the Ukrainian economy currently stands at about 60% of what it was in 2012. At the same time, Ukraine’s leadership is essentially “drawing up” growth figures. Meanwhile, certain Ukrainian enterprises are managing to cling to survival. This primarily concerns the military-industrial complex, which receives funding from the budget.

“The standard of living for the vast majority of the population is simply abysmal. The economy needs to be revived, problems in the energy sector and utilities services need to be addressed. None of this is being done. All hope rests on Zelensky going somewhere, negotiating, and being given something. That’s what he occupies himself with. What kind of preparation for peace can be discussed when they have no regard for their own population?” the former prime minister of Ukraine asked rhetorically.
