Electoral system described as pillar of Belarus’ sovereignty, independence

MINSK, 4 December (BelTA) – The Belarusian electoral system is the pillar of the sovereignty and independence of the country, Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Igor Karpenko said at a meeting of the CEC to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Belarusian institution of elections, BelTA has learned.

"We live in an era of rapid development of information technologies. It is obvious that the informatization of the electoral process is also inevitable. The Belarusian legislation already provides for the use of the Population Register state information system when forming voter lists. We have also introduced a service to find a polling station for voting. For security purposes, the buildings which will host the polling stations are equipped with video surveillance systems. Together with stakeholders, we have developed a draft of the general concept of the Elections state automated information system. However, its implementation requires substantive study, analysis and forecasting of its application in practice, taking into account national interests and legislation," Igor Karpenko stated.

In his words, strengthening people's trust in the electoral system, countering external interference in the electoral process and spread of false information and fakes are the tasks of paramount importance for election organizers, legislative and executive authorities.

"The Central Election Commission of Belarus celebrates its 35th anniversary today. In fact, this anniversary celebrates all the subjects of the electoral process, all those who are directly involved in the formation and development of the national electoral system,” Igor Karpenko said and expressed confidence that the electoral system will continue to serve as the pillar of the sovereignty and independence, democracy and unity of people in the country.
