Belarusian students win four medals at International Olympiad in Informatics

MINSK, 3 August (BelTA) - Belarusian school students Informatics won two silver and two bronze medals at the 27th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), BelTA learned from the press center of the Education Ministry.

The Olympiad was held in Almaty (Kazakhstan) from 26 July to 2 August at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. Team Belarus comprised Nikita Sazanovich, the 11th grade student at Stolbtsy secondary school No.3, Barbara kuskova, the 11th grade student at Vitebsk Gymnasium No. 1, Ilya Medyanikov, the 10th grade student from gymnasium No. 8 from Vitebsk, and Alexei Vistyazh, the 11th grade student of the Ivye secondary school. The team was coached by Irina Kirinovich, the head of the Department of Informatics of the Minsk State higher Radioengineering College, and Alexei Tosltikov, a senior lecturer in computational mathematics at the Belarusian State University.

All members of the Belarusian team have won awards: Nikita Sazanovich and Barbara Kuskova won silver, and Ilya Medyanikov and Alexei Vistyazh picked up bronze medals.

All in all, 322 contestants from 84 countries took part in the event. The students are typically given three problems which they have to solve in five hours. Each student works on his/her own, with only a computer and no other help allowed. Usually to solve a task the contestant has to write a computer program (in C, C++ or Pascal, and occasionally Fortran and PHP, Java). The program is graded by being run with secret test data.

The International Olympiad in Informatics is the annual competition for secondary school students. This is one of the most prestigious intellectual programming competition which aims to discover talented students from different countries and to support them. In 2016 the contest will be held in Kazan (Russia).
