MINSK, 12 November (BelTA) – The second unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant will begin a scheduled preventive repair on 13 November 2025, the press service of the Belarusian Energy Ministry told BelTA.
Nuclear power plants organize such repairs every year in accordance with a fixed routine in order to make sure the equipment remains in working order. As part of the process the second unit will undergo scheduled maintenance, diagnostics and repair of plant and equipment, including inspection of the state of the base metal and welded seams of the equipment and the piping.
As an important step of the work spent nuclear fuel will be replaced with fresh fuel: about 25% of the fuel-rod arrays containing fresh nuclear fuel will be inserted into the reactor core.
The scheduled preventive repair will be carried out by personnel of the Belarusian nuclear power plant with assistance of workers of Belarusian and Russian organizations.
The second unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant was commissioned on 1 November 2023 and has generated a total of about 18.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity since then.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant with two VVER-1200 reactors with the total output capacity of 2,400MW has been built according to the Russian design AES-2006. It is an evolutionary nuclear power plant design with third-generation water-moderated reactors with enhanced safety. They boast improved technical and economic parameters. A unique combination of active and passive safeguards is their key peculiarity.
