Belarus' PM uncertain about resumption of visa-free travel in border area

MINSK, 22 February (BelTA) – There is no guarantee that Belarus will resume visa-free travel in the border area when the pandemic-related restrictions are over, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said in an interview with the Lithuanian newspaper Vakaro Zinios, BelTA has learned.

“It is possible to resume visa-free travel in the border area. I think it will be done soon. Yet, we must take into account the following thing - we waived visas as part of our good neighborliness policy in relation to Lithuania and Poland. This was done at a time when we lived peacefully, communicated, addressed controversial issues, when we were not called a hostile state. Of course, at that time there was a policy of greater openness in this matter. Now we need to weigh all pros and cons. I can't guarantee that we will automatically resume visa-free travel when the pandemic-related restrictions are over,” said Roman Golovchenko.

According to him, everything depends on the relations between the states. “We do not hold a grudge. We were destined to be neighbors, we lived, worked and never had any problems with each other. As soon as bilateral relations are mended, as soon as the tone changes, we will immediately return to these issues,” the prime minister said.
