Belarus’ Parliament speaker lays flowers at mass grave in Italy’s Palestrina

MINSK, 25 April (BelTA) – A Belarusian delegation led by Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko laid flowers at a mass grave in Palestrina, Italy on 25 April, BelTA has learned.

The monument was erected to honor the residents of the Italian town of Palestrina, who heroically fought against Nazism and fascism during World War II. The names of three Red Army soldiers who escaped German captivity and joined the Italian partisans are inscribed on the monument: Nikolai Demyanchenko, Anatoly Kurepin, and Vasily Skorokhodov. Their names are engraved on marble tablets, guarded by a sorrowful angel. The local residents continue to tell their story and take care of the monument, preserving their memory for future generations.
"Today, Italy is celebrating the 80th anniversary of its liberation from fascism. We have come to this small cemetery in the outskirts of Rome to pay our respects and lay flowers in memory of the Italian partisans who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of their country. Among these brave fighters were citizens of the Soviet Union, who were in captivity, then escaped, joined the partisan detachments, fought on this land and died here. We have gathered here to honor their memory, express our respect and lay flowers," Igor Sergeyenko said.
Following the instruction of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, the Belarusian delegation led by Igor Sergeyenko arrived in Vatican to attend Pope Francis’ funeral. The delegation also included the ambassador to the Holy See and the charge d'affaires in Italy.
