MINSK, 21 March (BelTA) – The draft decree on in vitro fertilization will be finalized as quickly as possible, Belarusian Healthcare Minister Aleksandr Khodzhayev said on the air of the First News TV channel, BelTA has learned.
“I am confident that it will be done as quickly as possible, because the draft decree itself has been very thoroughly developed. We spent a considerable amount of time reaching the level of the decree that is now well-founded, both from the perspective of medical care and in terms of the demand we see. This is not so much about revision as it is about beginning discussions with the target audience – the Belarusian Women Union,” Aleksandr Khodzhayev said. He also added that the draft decree could be finalized and submitted for the head of state to sign within 10 to 14 days.
The minister noted that the draft decree has been made as liberal as possible for women. What does that mean? “This means the broadest possible access to the procedure for vulnerable groups of women who, for whatever reason, have not yet been able to realize their reproductive potential. International experience, modern methods and equipment will be used to the fullest extent. The head of state once again emphasized today that the issue is not about money, but about what is needed to satisfy the desires of all and to make the in vitro fertilization method as effective as possible for our women,” he said.
Aleksandr Khodzhayev outlined the main innovations of the decree. A second free IVF attempt will be introduced: not only for married women, but also for single women. The age limit for the second attempt is also set to be raised to 49 years. “A second IVF attempt up to the age of 49 will be offered to women who were able to use the first attempt and achieve a result – giving birth. After the age of 40, the effectiveness of this procedure declines. Therefore, it is important that by the age of 40, our couples and single women, recognizing their need for motherhood, are able to use the first attempt and achieve results,” the minister emphasized.
As reported, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko heard a report on the draft decree on in vitro fertilization on 20 March. Following the discussion, the head of state instructed the officials to finalize the draft decree together with the Belarusian Women Union in order to hear opinions on the matter not only from medical professionals.
