Belarus developing new five-year gender equality action plan

MINSK, 4 September (BelTA) – Belarus is developing a national action plan to ensure gender equality for the next five-year period, BelTA learned from Yelena Komlik, consultant of the Population, Gender and Family Policy Office of the Belarusian Labor and Social Protection Ministry, at a seminar dedicated to the results of the large-scale survey on women’s health and family status by the Belarusian National Statistical Committee.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Protection is currently working on the national action plan to ensure gender equality in Belarus for the next five-year period. The survey on women’s health and status in the family conducted by the Belarusian National Statistical Committee this year is highly relevant, Yelena Komlik noted. “We have already presented the draft plan. And the results of this research will allow us to make adjustments to this policy document, which will be in effect for the next five years,” she said. “We are constantly and actively working to promote social awareness that domestic violence is an unacceptable way to build relationships or resolve conflicts.”

The Ministry of Labor and Social Protection pays special attention to this problem and carries out preventative measures in several key areas. One of them is strengthening social protection for families raising children. “In addition, we provide a wide range of social services. We have a social service center established in every district. Victims are provided with consulting services, social, psychological and mediation services, a complex of social patronage services involving all interested parties, including education and healthcare authorities, and, if necessary, public and religious organizations. We also have a temporary shelter service that provides safe living conditions for victims. To figure out what to do next, a person often simply needs to find a safe place and receive psychological help,” Yelena Komlik explained.
