Lukashenko wants Belarusian banking system to stay one step ahead

MINSK, 9 September (BelTA) – The banking system should be one step ahead but should not get too far ahead of the development of the entire country. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the relevant statement during a conference with National Bank specialists and top managers of banks on 9 September, BelTA has learned.

The head of state noted that a lot of smart specialists work in the banking sector and represent a huge resource that the head of the sector should be able to utilize skillfully. “I speak sincerely. When I was an MP, I always said that the most educated, most advanced people work in our banking sector. I remember speaking in the Supreme Council and saying: ‘Our trouble and our problem stem from the fact that despite the availability of these brains the banking sector has gotten too far ahead of the development of the entire country. And of the economy, of the financial sphere, and of the banks.’ It went too far. And it was a big problem. This is why you shouldn’t get too far ahead but you should be one step forward. This is what I ask from you,” the president stressed.

Aleksandr Lukashenko mentioned that he had previously decided to appoint Roman Golovchenko head of the National Bank because he is a sensible manager and an experienced man, who should implement what he had been talking about, including in the capacity of the prime minister. “He would always criticize the National Bank. He rarely praised it,” the Belarusian leader remarked. “One cannot work as the prime minister for a long time. It is not just a frying pan. In today’s situation it is comparable to hell. This is why I didn’t send [Roman Golovchenko to the National Bank] for recreation. I warned him that he would not rest, that he would have to mobilize smart people and help the prime minister and the government move the economy. It is impossible to accomplish without you.”

He encouraged everyone to pitch in in order to utilize the resources of the National Bank in full. “Men, you should get involved whatever your upbringing, education, and conscience may be. I mean in your heads. You have one country. Nobody wants you anywhere else. The self-exiled opposition has already demonstrated it. As you can see, nobody wants them,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said. “This is why let’s move forward in our own country. Do you want cryptocurrencies and tokens? There you go. We will create a good regulatory framework for it together with you. Act. No need to run anywhere. Nobody wants you over there. There are plenty of other employees over there. Well, if someone wants a menial job, if someone wants to wash dishes, be my guest. Try it over there. Once you feel bad, you will come back.”

“You cannot burn down bridges like some people do. I am extremely interested in our people living here. And we will do everything in order to return the crazy ones back into the country so that they could become smarter,” Aleksandr Lukashenko added.
