MOZYR, 6 November (BelTA) – During a working trip to Gomel Oblast Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko underlined the importance of land amelioration, BelTA has learned.
Aleksandr Lukashenko drew attention to land amelioration as a matter of importance for the region. “Nobody, no private individual will build canals and structures on his own,” the president said. “Nobody will but the state. This is why we have started putting major efforts into land amelioration.” The efforts are primarily channeled into the restoration of amelioration systems, which were built in the Soviet times. Certainly, it would have been a good idea to start the work earlier but some difficulties kept popping up all the time, including financial ones. “We have been careless about these matters at times. And I see that the land is getting ruined already. I see shrubs. These canals are getting covered with weeds. We had to storm this problem as well. This is why land amelioration is a key issue,” the president stressed.
Aleksandr Lukashenko said that while heading from Minsk to Gomel Oblast, he examined the state of farming standards from the helicopter. He examined the state of the lands and farmlands and is satisfied with what he has seen on the whole. “I cannot criticize anything except the fact that you’ve abandoned fields in lowlands and don’t plough them. It is bad,” the head of state remarked. He pointed out that even land plots as large as 5-10 hectares are left out of crop rotation. Essentially they are abandoned. Meanwhile, the state spends considerable funds on land improvement in order to make the lands fit for agricultural operations.
The president warned that his “inspection” of districts in Gomel Oblast is not over yet: “I will take a look at all the districts here. Including Yelnya District, Narovlya District, and those to the south. Lelchitsy. I will look at how people work.”
