Lukashenko signs laws ratifying two international treaties with Russia

MINSK, 15 October (BelTA) - Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has signed laws ratifying two international treaties with Russia, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian head of state.

One of them is a protocol on amending the agreement between Belarus and Russia on equal rights for citizens of 25 December 1998. Its implementation will mutually grant Belarusian and Russian citizens permanently residing in the other country the right to participate in local elections (to vote and stand for election in local government bodies).

The other document is an agreement between Belarus and Russia on measures for the mutual protection of their citizens from unjustified prosecution by foreign states and international judicial bodies. Its purpose is to protect citizens, including current or former officials, from unjustified prosecution by third parties, citing the trend towards the politicization of international courts and other international criminal justice mechanisms.
